Morning writers, I hope you’re all having a great week.
I’ve spent a fair amount of time chatting to some wonderful writers, and as always my heart swells with love for the online writing community. It got me thinking about this blog, and all it’s done for me and my writing journey. And I decided I’d share the way a blog could transform your writing journey too, if you don’t already have one.
1. It holds you accountable
When I started my blog I committed to writing weekly posts, based on things I’d done/learned in that week. And so, I had to make sure I was always doing something, be it writing, researching, plotting or editing. Knowing I had to update my blog at the end of the week held me accountable, and helped me make sure I stayed on track. Setting up a blog could be the same for you! It gives you a goal, based on how often you decide to post, and it soon becomes an enjoyable habit that’s impossible to break.
2. You have to practice what you preach
It’s easy to give advice and not always so easy to take it. But you should take your own advice. Because often, the advice your giving to other writers is exactly what you need to hear for yourself. If you’re going to write a blog to share tips and advice, then you need to practice what your preach. This can help to keep you in good habits, and keep you positive about moving forward.
3. You’ll meet amazing people
Without a doubt the best thing I’ve gained from this blog are my wonderful writer friends. Running a blog and connecting with others on theirs is a great way to get chatting to people in the same situation as you. These amazing people have offered me advice, encouragement, support, feedback and all round honesty. I cannot recommend enough that you get involved with the writers community on as many platforms as possible, because they are all so inspiring.
4. It gives you something to look back on
Your blog serves as your own online writing journal. It gives you something to look back on, to see how far you’ve come and remind yourself of your journey. From finishing first drafts, to notable achievements. It’s a great record of how you’ve grown and improved, what you’ve learnt along the way, every struggle you’ve overcome and every success you’ve had. All of this can help spur you on when you are having doubts or are in a writer’s slump, to ensure you stick with it and never give up.
What does your blog mean to you? Has it transformed or enhanced your journey as a writer? Drop me a comment to share your thoughts and stories.
Until then,
Keep writing,
M

Great posts and my thoughts exactly though I‘m just starting out with a set direction for my blog but especially practise what you preach helps me often to move forward even when it does seem hard 😊 xx

All of this is so true, Meelie! I especially relate to running a blog keeping you accountable, introducing you to other writers, and being a record of what you’ve achieved. You’ve done an amazing job with your blog, and my week just doesn’t feel the same without a post from you to read and learn from 😊.

Aw thank you so much, Kate! I’d miss your blogs terrible too, I always settle down to read on a Friday morning (because of our time difference!) and have many of your posts bookmarked to be re-read when I need them most x

True. A blog can be a great aid in other writings, a window to another world, a diary, an opportunity to experiment, and so much more. It can become an end in itself, so if one has other interests one has to guard against them becoming eclipsed.

I’m just starting out on this blogging journey myself – thank you for the inspiration. I’ve been writing for a long time now in isolation, but I’d love to be able to become more a part of online communities. Do you have any specific advice for folks who are just beginning blogging? Thanks, and best wishes!

Welcome to the blogging community, Jimmy! I would just say be yourself, write about what interests you, things you know, things you’ve learned, things you want to know…be honest and authentic. It’s that simple 🙂 I look forward to following your journey x

Love this!! My writing process has definitely changed since I started my blog almost two years ago both for the worse and the better. I’m primarily a fiction writer, so having an outlet where I can write without putting much thought into my words has given me a place to procrastinate the writing I SHOULD be doing, but it’s also given me the space to connect with amazing new writers!!

Lovely read! Some fantastic advice here!
If you would like (and this is totally optional) I was going to link to your blog in my next Mystery Blogger Award, as a way of linking different readers together a little easier. There’s no need to do the 5-question quiz if you’d prefer not to, but would you like your blog mentioned so new readers might check it out?
