Morning all, and happy ‘last-day-of-2017’. I always find that the dawn of a new year is the perfect time for reflection and looking back on the experiences, achievements and struggles that the year bought with it.
I’d love to hear about the highs and lows of your year so please do comment below and let me know.
For me, 2017 has been a good year for writing. It feels empowering to say that. There have been lows, of course, plenty of bad days, even weeks for writing, but overall I am pleased and proud. I’m going to list my achievements here, for a touch of self pride, but mostly to represent how you can always return to writing, start new projects and meet your goals. I hope you’ll find this post to be full of positivity.
1. I got back into writing after a year out
When I started my blog I’d recently gotten back into writing after a year away from it. Due to health reasons, amongst other things, I simply had no desire to pick up the pen in 2016. This year, however, I took it back up with a vengeance and I couldn’t be more pleased.
2. I became an active part of the online writer’s community
Through this blog and my instagram I have formed friendships within an incredible community. The support and encouragement that I receive from you all overwhelms me and has been immeasurably vital to keeping me on track with my writing goals. From time to time I also receive lovely messages saying that my posts have helped you in some ways, and that really is a huge achievement that I am very proud of. Thank you all!
3. I got 88% on a university assignment
I left school at 16 after hating it fiercely my whole life. Upon leaving, however, I developed a huge passion for learning and last year I enrolled with the Open University to study for a degree in English and Creative Writing. I had been out of education since 2008 and not completed any education higher than GCSE, so when I achieved 88% in an assignment this year I was so, so happy.
4. I finished my first draft
By far my biggest achievement this year was finishing the first draft of my novel. I am so excited to see where my second, and third and fourth, drafts take me next year.
5. I read over 52 books
Not quite writing related, unless you consider the fact that to write well, you need to read often. I set myself a goal of a book a week, and am pleased to say I managed it.
As mentioned above, I truly would love to hear your accomplishments for the year. Please share below so that I can celebrate your successes and encourage your future goals.
In the mean time,
Have a wonderful new year,
Speak in 2018!
and
Keep writing
